Connectedness to Nature Scale: Adult

(Mayer & McPherson Frantz, 2004)

The Connectedness to Nature Scale (CNS) measures to what degree people feel part of nature. The study by Mayer & McPherson shows that this is a personality trait. This trait is predictive of responsible environmental behavior and subjective wellbeing.

The scale can be used to measure the effectiveness of nature-based therapy approaches. A pre-test is done at the beginning of services or retreat experiences. This establishes a baseline. At the end of an experience, a post-test is completed to see if a person's connection to nature changes as a result of the experiences. Thus far, data supports that nature-based expressive arts therapy and equine-assisted expressive arts therapy result in increased scores.
